RBI HIKES RATES: INFLATION IS BACK AT THE CENTRE OF THE STORY

The Monetary Policy Committee raises the repo rate as oil, inflation and external risks reshape the policy backdrop.

THE DECISION

The Reserve Bank of India has raised the benchmark repo rate by 25 basis points to 5.50%. The six-member MPC approved the move unanimously. It is the first RBI rate increase since February 2023. The policy stance was shifted from neutral to calibrated tightening. cite Reuters, 7 Oct 2026

WHY NOW?

The decision comes as inflation has moved above the RBI's 4% medium-term target for a third consecutive month. Consumer inflation reached 4.82% in August, while higher oil prices linked to the Iran conflict and weaker monsoon conditions have increased the inflation risk. cite Reuters, 7 Oct 2026

At the same time, growth remains resilient: India's GDP expanded 7.8% in the April–June quarter, above the RBI's earlier 7% forecast. That gives the central bank more room to focus on price stability without responding to an immediate growth collapse. cite Reuters, 7 Oct 2026

WHAT DID THE MARKET DO?

Ahead of the announcement, Indian equities were already under pressure. Reuters reported the Nifty 50 at 22,590.8, down 0.80%, and the Sensex at 72,569.36, down 0.69%, with rate-sensitive sectors among the weakest. Brent crude was around $101.6 a barrel. cite Reuters, 7 Oct 2026

The more important market signal will be the reaction after the policy announcement: whether the hike was already priced in, how the rupee responds, and what happens to banks, real estate, autos and other rate-sensitive sectors.

WHAT IT MEANS

·       Borrowing costs are likely to face upward pressure, particularly for floating-rate loans.

·       Banks may see changes in lending and deposit pricing as the policy rate moves higher.

·       Rate-sensitive sectors such as real estate and autos face a more challenging financing backdrop.

·       For investors, the Governor's guidance on future policy may matter more than the 25-bps move itself.

·       The crucial macro question is whether today's hike is a one-off response to supply-side inflation or the start of a longer tightening phase.

BIZ MASALA TAKE

The RBI is no longer looking at inflation as yesterday's problem.

The combination of oil, currency pressure and food-supply risks has changed the policy equation. Yet India's growth remains strong. The MPC is therefore attempting a delicate balance: contain inflation expectations without unnecessarily damaging the expansion.

For markets, the next clue is not the rate itself. It is the path the RBI now wants investors and borrowers to expect.
