RBI HIKES REPO RATE TO 5.50%

Inflation, oil and a strong economy push the RBI towards a tighter policy stance.

THE DECISION

The Monetary Policy Committee unanimously raised the policy repo rate by 25 basis points to 5.50%. The RBI also shifted its stance from neutral to calibrated tightening. This is the first repo-rate increase since February 2023. citeturn0news0turn0news3

WHY THE RBI ACTED

·       August consumer inflation rose to 4.82%, above the RBI's 4% target for a third consecutive month.

·       Oil prices above $100 a barrel and continuing West Asia tensions have increased imported-inflation risks.

·       The RBI said inflation expectations are rising and price pressures are broadening.

·       Growth remains resilient: the RBI now sees FY27 GDP growth at 7.1%, while April–June GDP growth was 7.8%.

THE MARKET REACTION

The rate move itself was broadly expected. Immediately after the announcement, the 10-year government bond yield rose to 7.2655%, about 5 basis points higher. The rupee was broadly steady around ₹96.36 to the dollar, while the Nifty 50 and Sensex remained lower by roughly 0.6% and 0.7%, respectively. citeturn0news0

For equities, the key question now is whether the policy stance changes expectations for another rate increase. Banks, NBFCs, real estate, autos and other rate-sensitive sectors are likely to remain in focus.

WHAT IT MEANS

·       Floating-rate borrowers could face higher interest costs as the policy rate moves through the banking system.

·       Deposit rates may also adjust as banks respond to the changed liquidity and funding environment.

·       Bond yields have already reacted, signalling that fixed-income markets are taking the tightening signal seriously.

·       The shift to calibrated tightening is more significant than the 25-bps move alone because it leaves the door open to further action.

BIZ MASALA TAKE

The RBI's message is clear: the inflation environment is no longer benign.

India still has strong growth, but the combination of higher oil prices, food pressures and currency risks has changed the policy balance. The next question is whether today's hike remains a one-off response to an external shock or becomes the beginning of a longer tightening cycle.
