Telangana plans to establish a Centre of Excellence for micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs), with a focus on technology adoption, market access and investment linkages, IT and Industries Minister D. Sridhar Babu said at the LUB MSME South India Summit in Hyderabad on October 10. The stated aim is also to help promote products made in Telangana in national and international markets.

The announcement points to a proposed support platform for smaller businesses, but key details remain open. Public reports have not specified its location, funding, operating model, partners or expected start date. It is therefore more accurate to describe the facility as a plan rather than a formalised blueprint.

What the proposed centre could focus on

The minister’s remarks identified three broad priorities: helping MSMEs adopt modern technology, supporting their access to markets, and connecting them with investment. The specific services, eligibility rules and delivery model have not yet been detailed in the reports.

Priority

What has been stated

Technology adoption

Support for MSMEs to take up modern technology; the delivery mechanism is not specified.

Market access

Help businesses reach markets, including national and international markets.

Investment links

Build connections that can improve access to investment; no funding terms have been announced.

A separate national technology initiative is already planned

The Telangana proposal should not be confused with COMET, a separate Union-government initiative. In 2024, the Ministry of MSME said a Centre of Excellence for MSME Enablement of Technology was being set up at ni-msme in Hyderabad in collaboration with IIT Hyderabad. The ministry described its planned role as supporting technology development, testing, demonstration and certification for MSMEs.

The two initiatives have overlapping technology aims, but available announcements describe them separately. More information from the Telangana government will be needed to understand how the proposed state facility would work alongside existing programmes.

What to watch next

The proposal’s value for businesses will depend on implementation: whether MSMEs can access practical technology support, find buyers and investors, and get clear information about services and eligibility. The next milestones to watch are an official project structure, budget, location and timeline.

The minister also indicated that the state planned a monthly MSME Grievance Day. That proposal, like the Centre of Excellence, awaits further implementation details.
