EDITORIAL VISUAL OVERVIEW — The competing monetisation strategies of OpenAI, Anthropic and Google.

The big picture

Artificial intelligence has entered its monetisation phase. After years of heavy spending on models, chips and data centres, the industry’s biggest question is how to turn usage into durable revenue.

The three leading answers look very different. OpenAI is adding advertising to subscriptions, enterprise products and APIs. Anthropic is growing mainly through enterprise customers and developer tools. Google is putting ads into AI-powered search on top of the world’s largest advertising business.

The core takeaway: there is no single AI business model yet. Advertising, subscriptions, APIs and enterprise contracts are competing, and often complementary, ways to pay for very expensive systems.

OpenAI

Subscriptions, enterprise, APIs and ChatGPT Ads

ChatGPT Ads reached a $1 billion annualised run rate on 31 August 2026, under 200 days after launch

Can ads grow without costing user trust?

Anthropic

Enterprise contracts, developer tools, subscriptions, APIs

Overall run rate reportedly above $65 billion at the end of July 2026 (about $47 billion in May, about $9 billion at the end of 2025)

Can enterprise demand cover the cost of computing?

Google

Search and YouTube advertising, cloud, subscriptions, AI products

Q2 2026 advertising revenue of $81.6 billion, up 14%; Search ads up 17% to $63.3 billion

Can AI search keep and grow advertising value?

Read the numbers carefully: a run rate is the current pace multiplied over a year, not booked or audited revenue. OpenAI’s $1 billion covers advertising only. Anthropic’s $65 billion covers its whole business and was reported by news agencies from a person familiar with the matter; Anthropic declined to comment. Google’s figures are reported quarterly results. None of these can be compared like for like.

1. OpenAI: building an ad business inside ChatGPT

OpenAI said on 31 August that ChatGPT Ads had reached a $1 billion annualised run rate in less than 200 days. The US pilot had passed $100 million within six weeks of its April launch. Ads show to users on the free tier and the lower-priced Go plan, and the company says ChatGPT has more than 1 billion weekly users.

The same day, OpenAI opened its self-service Ads Manager to advertisers in India, Europe, the Middle East and North Africa. Ads are available in more than 40 countries, tens of thousands of advertisers are using the platform, and small and medium businesses now make up a material share of the ad business. For Indian advertisers, that means buying ChatGPT placements directly.

Why it matters, and the catch

A chat assistant sees people describing what they need and comparing options in one conversation. That is valuable to advertisers, and it gives OpenAI a way to earn from users who do not pay.

The risk is trust. People use assistants for advice, so any hint that a paid placement shapes an answer can damage the whole product. OpenAI says ads are labelled, kept separate from answers and do not influence what ChatGPT says, and that advertisers do not see private conversations.

The $1 billion also needs context. Axios reported that OpenAI told investors it expects about $2.5 billion of advertising revenue this year, so the current run rate is still well short of that goal. OpenAI’s overall run rate was reported at about $40 billion in August.

The business test: can advertising grow while retention, advertiser returns, privacy safeguards and trust hold up?

2. Anthropic: enterprise demand as the engine

Anthropic’s growth comes mainly from businesses and developers, led by its Claude Code coding tool. Reuters and Bloomberg reported that its run rate topped $65 billion at the end of July, up from $47 billion in May and about $9 billion at the end of 2025. Bloomberg also reported preliminary second-quarter revenue above $11.5 billion and positive adjusted operating income. By these reported run rates Anthropic is now ahead of OpenAI, though Axios cautions that the two companies may not measure revenue the same way.

Anthropic was valued at $965 billion after a $65 billion funding round in May and has confidentially filed for an IPO. A listing was widely expected as soon as this autumn; we found no confirmation that it has happened.

Anthropic has also said publicly, since February, that Claude will stay free of advertising, with no sponsored links and no advertiser influence on answers. It earns from enterprise contracts and paid subscriptions instead. That makes it the clearest contrast to OpenAI’s approach.

Why enterprise contracts matter, and the catch

When AI becomes part of a company’s coding, research, support and operations, spending can grow from individual subscriptions to large, recurring deployments. That raises the stakes on reliability, security and data handling.

It is not automatically high-margin. Serving big customers takes enormous computing capacity, support and continuing model development, so revenue growth is tied closely to the cost and availability of computing.

The business test: can strong corporate demand turn into durable economics while the infrastructure bill keeps rising?

3. Google: AI inside the world’s biggest ad machine

Google starts with something neither rival has at scale: an established advertising business. In the second quarter of 2026, Alphabet’s revenue rose 24% to $119.8 billion. Google advertising grew 14% to $81.6 billion, Search ads rose 17% to $63.3 billion, YouTube ads rose 13% to $11.1 billion, and the Google Network segment slipped 1% to $7.3 billion.

Google already places ads in AI Overviews and AI Mode, bought through its existing Google Ads campaign tools and labelled “Sponsored”. As of April 2026, the standalone Gemini app carried no ads, and Google has said it has no current plans to change that.

The business test: can Google bring ads into AI-driven discovery without hurting user experience or the value of Search?

The economics behind the race

All three face the same bill: computing, research, product development and customer acquisition. Each revenue model spreads that burden differently.

Revenue model

Potential advantage

Main challenge

Advertising

Earns from users who do not pay

Must protect trust, privacy and answer quality

Consumer subscriptions

Recurring revenue from paying users

Must justify the price of premium features

Enterprise contracts

Larger, recurring deployments

Needs reliability, security and support

Developer APIs

Revenue rises with customer usage

Demand and costs swing with usage

Cloud partnerships

Infrastructure, distribution, business customers

Heavy capacity commitments and partner dependence

No model guarantees profit. Growth has to be judged against computing costs, infrastructure commitments, research spending and retention.

Can AI advertising become a major industry?

Possibly. An assistant that helps people compare products is a natural place for relevant, clearly labelled sponsored results. Google’s Search figures show how large an ad business can get when it sits close to buying intent.

But a chat assistant is not a web page. Users may treat it as an adviser. If paid placements are hard to tell from neutral advice, the loss of confidence could hurt the product. Success will depend on clear labelling, user controls, privacy protection, relevance and a believable wall between ads and answers.

What investors and businesses should watch

•             Advertising revenue: is it becoming a material, repeatable income stream rather than a headline run rate?

•             Enterprise spending: are companies moving beyond pilots to wide deployments?

•             Revenue quality: how much is recurring, and how sensitive is it to usage?

•             Computing costs: can capacity grow without costs outrunning revenue?

•             User trust: do ad formats and AI recommendations keep confidence intact?

•             Disclosures: OpenAI and Anthropic have both reportedly filed confidentially for IPOs. Audited filings would replace run-rate claims with real numbers.

The Biz Masala takeaway

The AI industry is finding several paths to money rather than one formula. OpenAI shows that conversational AI can support a new ad channel. Anthropic’s reported growth shows how much businesses will pay for AI that does real work. Google’s ad machine gives it a third route.

The real question is not who reports the biggest run rate. It is who turns adoption into durable revenue while controlling computing costs and keeping users’ trust. For businesses, the opening is to find practical AI uses with measurable returns. For investors, it is to tell reported results from forecasts, and growth from sustainable economics.

Editorial notes (NOT for publication)

Fact-check changes made

•             Anthropic’s figure was out of date. The draft used $30 billion (April 2026). The latest reported figure is above $65 billion at the end of July. I replaced it and noted that it comes from news reports citing a person familiar with the matter, not a company announcement.

•             Dropped: the claim of 1,000+ customers spending over $1 million, and the compute-partnership details. I could not re-verify them in this pass. Restore them only from Anthropic’s own announcements.

•             Added: the $100 million pilot milestone, OpenAI’s reported $2.5 billion 2026 ad target, OpenAI’s roughly $40 billion overall run rate, and Alphabet’s actual Q2 2026 numbers, which replace the vague Google paragraph.

•             Corrected for precision: Google ads sit in AI Overviews and AI Mode, not the Gemini app.

•             Checked and confirmed: the $1 billion ChatGPT Ads run rate, the under-200-days timing, the 31 August self-service launch in India, Europe, MENA, and the 40+ country reach.

Disclosure to consider: Anthropic is one of the companies covered, and Claude, the assistant that helped fact-check this draft, is made by Anthropic. Consider a one-line note to readers, for example: “Anthropic, covered in this article, makes the AI assistant used in fact-checking.”

Before publishing: re-check run-rate figures and the Anthropic IPO status on the day, since both are moving quickly.
