The Poet-Builder of Indian Infrastructure
A
retrospective on Dr. A.V.S. Raju — the entrepreneur who built a construction
institution and pursued an extraordinary literary life

Dr. A.V.S. Raju. Portrait supplied for this Biz Masala
feature.
A builder whose second life was on the page
India’s infrastructure story is usually
told through concrete, contracts, highways, dams and balance sheets. Dr. Alluri
Venkata Satyanarayana Raju—known as A.V.S. Raju—complicated that familiar
portrait. He helped build Nagarjuna Construction Company into a national
engineering and construction business, while devoting an extraordinary amount
of time to Telugu poetry and devotional writing. His death in Hyderabad on 13
October 2026, aged 89, closes a chapter in the story of a founder whose
interests extended well beyond the construction site.
Born on 18 April 1937 in Antarvedipalem, in
the erstwhile East Godavari district of Andhra Pradesh, Raju began his business
journey in 1956. In 1978, he founded Nagarjuna Construction Company; the
company became a public limited company in 1990 and later grew into listed NCC
Limited, with operations across buildings, transportation, water and
environment, irrigation, electrical transmission and distribution, railways and
mining.
From a regional enterprise to a national contractor

The significance of NCC’s growth is not
simply that a construction firm became large. Engineering and construction
companies must coordinate labour, materials, subcontractors, equipment,
finance, approvals and delivery schedules across projects that can stretch over
years. The capability lies in managing interfaces: between design and
execution, the public client and contractor, and a project’s promised timetable
and the realities on the ground.
NCC’s published performance table records
an order book of ₹18,088 crore in 2016–17, rising to ₹83,004 crore in 2025–26.
That is a substantial expansion in the value of projects on hand. An order
book, however, is not revenue already earned, cash already collected or profit
guaranteed. Projects must still be executed, billed, paid for and completed.
The distinction matters in a sector where execution pace, working capital and
client approvals can shape financial outcomes.

The poet behind the project pipeline

Editorial visual on literary and devotional writing; not a
photograph of Raju’s original manuscripts.
Raju’s literary output is the part of his
life that resists the usual corporate biography. Contemporary reporting
described more than 25,000 poems and a Guinness World Records distinction in
2008 for a single-volume book of poems on Sri Sathya Sai Baba. The work is
associated with Sri Sai Sudha Madhuri, his extensive devotional writing. The
exact description of the record and the number of volumes should be reproduced
from the original Guinness record or an authoritative biography before making a
more specific claim.
The contrast is striking. Construction is
measured in dimensions, schedules, tolerances and quantities. Poetry is
measured in language, memory, devotion and the patient return to a line. Raju’s
public life suggests that he did not treat those worlds as mutually exclusive.
The scale of his writing does not need embellishment to be remarkable.
Recognition, values and succession
The Government of India conferred the Padma
Shri on Raju in 2010 in the Trade and Industry category. Acharya Nagarjuna
University awarded him a Doctor of Letters degree, according to contemporary
reporting. His public legacy also includes his role in establishing and
developing a construction business that continued beyond its founder’s direct
leadership.
Succession is one of the most consequential
tests of a founder’s legacy. NCC’s corporate profile identifies A.A.V. Ranga
Raju as managing director. The deeper test for any founder-led institution is
whether systems, governance, project discipline and talent development can
outlast the founder’s personal authority. A company’s continued scale is
important; the durability of its operating culture is the more demanding
measure.
The AVS Raju Pancha Mantra for business leadership
The following five principles are presented
as an editorial summary of the leadership lessons in the supplied draft, not as
a verified verbatim quotation:
1.
Plan for results — Measure progress by
outcomes, not by the volume of activity.
2.
Use common sense — Practical judgement
remains essential in complex decisions.
3.
Do first things first — Prioritise and
execute one important task at a time.
4.
Respect sustained work — There is no
shortcut to disciplined, continuous effort.
5.
Turn obstacles into options — Treat
constraints as problems to solve, not automatic reasons to stop.
What remains after the founder

Editorial illustration of infrastructure construction; not a
specific NCC project.
Raju’s legacy has at least two dimensions.
The first is tangible: an institution that participates in India’s
infrastructure build-out and a project pipeline recorded in company
disclosures. The second is cultural: a body of Telugu devotional poetry that
sits outside the standard measures of corporate achievement.
The most meaningful tribute is neither to
turn a life into a flawless legend nor to reduce it to an order-book chart. It
is to recognise the work, state the evidence accurately and ask what will
endure. NCC’s future performance will depend on its people, governance and
execution; Raju’s literary legacy will depend on readers who continue to
encounter the work. In both arenas, a founder’s achievement becomes lasting
only when others carry it forward.
