THE TCS TEST

AI IS GROWING. BUT IS THE OLD IT BUSINESS SHRINKING?

TCS has crossed the $3-billion annualised AI-revenue mark. Yet its underlying sequential growth remains modest. That contradiction may reveal what AI is really doing to India's technology-services machine.

THE NUMBER THAT GRABS THE HEADLINE

US$3.1 billion. That is TCS's annualised AI revenue in the September quarter, up from US$2.6 billion in Q1 FY27. The company says AI revenue has now crossed 10% of total revenue.

But another number matters: 0.5%. That was TCS's quarter-on-quarter constant-currency revenue growth in Q2 FY27. The contrast is the starting point for this investigation.

TCS reported these figures for the quarter ended 30 September 2026. The company also declared a second interim dividend of ₹12 per share.

THE AI CURVE IS MOVING MUCH FASTER

TCS's annualised AI revenue has risen from US$2.3 billion in Q4 FY26 to US$2.6 billion in Q1 FY27 and US$3.1 billion in Q2 FY27. That is a rapid increase, but it should not be confused with total company revenue growth.

The company says demand is shifting toward AI-native solutions, AI-led transformation of enterprise systems and autonomous global business services.

BUT HERE COMES THE PARADOX

For decades, India's IT-services engine was built around a powerful formula: PEOPLE → HOURS → PROJECTS → BILLING → REVENUE.

Generative and agentic AI introduce another formula: PEOPLE + AI → MORE OUTPUT IN FEWER HOURS.

THE OLD IT PYRAMID MAY BE THE REAL STORY

The Indian IT-services industry built a huge employment pyramid: large graduate intake, entry-level programmers and testers, experienced engineers, architects and consultants, then project and account leadership.

AI is particularly powerful at repetitive, structured and rules-based tasks. That does not automatically mean mass unemployment. It does mean the industry may need fewer people for the same amount of output in some activities.

TCS's workforce reached 598,056 in Q2, with learning hours rising 17% sequentially to 17.1 million. The company is therefore simultaneously automating work and investing heavily in workforce transition.

THE PEOPLE BEHIND THE TRANSITION

The strategic question for management is increasingly not simply how many people TCS employs, but what proportion of its workforce can move into higher-value AI, consulting, engineering and domain roles.

TCS IS BUILDING SOMETHING BIGGER THAN AN AI SERVICES BUSINESS

TCS has announced a major AI-infrastructure push through HyperVault, including a planned large-scale AI data-centre campus in Telangana. The company says the site can support up to 1 GW of capacity. This matters because traditional IT services are relatively asset-light, while AI infrastructure requires land, power, cooling, networking and high-density compute.

THE STRATEGIC SHIFT
Infrastructure → Cloud/compute → Data → AI platforms → Enterprise transformation → Business outcomes

THE DEAL PIPELINE TELLS ANOTHER STORY

Q2 total contract value was US$9.6 billion. TCS also announced major transformation partnerships with Porsche and Best Buy. The Best Buy Global Capability Center in India is being transitioned to TCS and is intended to become an AI Capability Center.

This points to a deeper shift: TCS is trying to move from supplying technology labour toward taking responsibility for enterprise transformation and measurable business outcomes.

WHO GETS THE PRODUCTIVITY DIVIDEND?

THE FOUR-WAY BATTLE
CLIENT: lower technology cost
TCS: higher delivery efficiency and potential margin protection
SHAREHOLDER: higher earnings and cash generation
EMPLOYEE: fewer routine tasks but potentially higher-value work

The answer will determine the economics of India's IT industry. If AI makes existing work cheaper, clients will eventually seek some of the productivity gain. If AI makes new categories of work economically viable, the market could expand fast enough to offset the labour intensity lost elsewhere.

THE FIVE TCS TESTS

1. Can AI replace lost legacy revenue?

Not merely add AI revenue, but create enough incremental business to offset pricing and volume pressure in older services.

2. Can TCS protect margins?

If AI reduces labour hours, clients may demand part of the efficiency gain through lower prices.

3. Can the workforce move up the value chain?

The scale of TCS means reskilling is an economic challenge, not merely an HR exercise.

4. Can India keep the entry-level technology pathway?

The country may need a new graduate → AI-enabled professional pathway as routine coding and testing become more automated.

5. Can TCS become more than an IT-services company?

Its AI infrastructure, physical AI labs and industry-specific transformation centres suggest a broader ambition.

OUR VERDICT

TCS's Q2 results do not prove that AI is destroying Indian IT. Nor do they prove that AI guarantees a new golden age. They show that the transition has begun.

AI revenue is accelerating much faster than overall sequential revenue. That divergence is the signal. The old TCS economic engine was built on human scale. The emerging one is being built on human expertise + AI + infrastructure + data + platforms + enterprise context.

THE BIZ MASALA TAKE
TCS is not fighting AI. It is trying to become one of the companies that owns the AI transition.

The real scoreboard is therefore not the US$3.1 billion AI number alone. It is whether TCS can turn AI-driven productivity into higher revenue, durable margins, new business, better-skilled employees and more economic value.

If it can, TCS will not merely have survived the AI revolution. It will have redesigned its business around it.
