The scientist who saw a bigger possibility
Dr. B. Parthasaradhi Reddy’s story begins
in a laboratory, not a boardroom. Before founding Hetero in 1993, he spent 13
years at Dr. Reddy’s Laboratories. In a 2012 interview, he described himself as
a scientist by background and said research and development shaped Hetero’s
early priorities. The first years, he recalled, were heavily focused on
R&D.
That instinct became part of Hetero’s
identity. In pharmaceuticals, a promising idea is only the beginning: chemistry
has to work consistently, quality must hold from batch to batch, and production
has to scale without compromising standards. Reddy’s scientific background gave
the young company a way to think about those challenges from the inside.
Building Hetero around science
Hetero’s current portfolio spans active
pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs)—the substances that give medicines their
therapeutic effect—and finished formulations. The company’s own profile
describes strengths in research, manufacturing and marketing, while its R&D
page highlights work on complex APIs, generics, biosimilars and drug-delivery
technologies.
The company also built a significant
position in antiretroviral medicines. Hetero says its work on affordable APIs
helped expand access to HIV/AIDS treatments. That is a commercially important
niche as well as a public-health contribution: reliable supply and competitive
production costs matter when medicines must reach large populations across
multiple countries.

From a small lab to a global footprint
In the 2012 PharmaBoardroom interview,
Reddy recalled that Hetero began in a small laboratory and had grown into a
business with thousands of employees and international manufacturing
capabilities. Those historical figures should not be read as current headcount
or capacity; they show the scale of the transformation he described at the
time.
One memory from Hetero’s early years has
stayed with me. During my interactions with Dr. B. Parthasaradhi Reddy in
1998–99, he told me that some of the key people who joined him at the beginning
had been promised cars—and that he fulfilled the promise within the first year.
I did not independently witness the handover; this is how the founder recounted
it to me. The detail matters because it brings the story down from corporate
scale to the people who took a chance on a young enterprise. Trust, in a growing
company, is built not only through strategy and capital, but also through
commitments remembered and honoured.
A restaurant encounter that stayed with me
Another memory gave me a glimpse of Dr.
Reddy away from the world of business. I had gone with my family for dinner at
Shanbagh in Panjagutta, Hyderabad, a restaurant I regarded as an everyday,
middle-class place to eat. I was surprised to see Dr. B. Parthasaradhi Reddy
arrive there with his wife and daughter, Sindhu. The encounter stayed with me
because it challenged the assumptions people can make about how a successful
industrialist chooses to live. It was a small, ordinary moment—not proof of a
person's entire character, but a personal impression of someone comfortable in
an unpretentious setting.
I have also understood him to be generous,
including through donations associated with religious and community causes such
as the Shirdi temple. Specific donation amounts and details should be included
only where they can be supported by reliable public records. Taken together
with my own recollections of meeting him, these details add a personal
dimension to the portrait—but the distinction between firsthand memory and
independently documented philanthropy should remain clear.
Over time, Hetero developed capabilities
across both active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) and finished medicines.
Bringing more of that work under one roof can help a manufacturer manage cost,
quality and supply. It also demands sustained investment in people, plants,
regulatory systems and execution.

Reading the numbers carefully
Hetero is a group with multiple legal
entities. For that reason, a single subsidiary’s financial statements should
not be presented as the consolidated performance of the whole group. The chart
below shows reported FY2024–25 figures attributed to Hetero Labs Limited in a
third-party company-information compilation; they are company-level figures,
not a group-wide valuation.

A frequently repeated estimate values
Hetero at around ₹50,000 crore, but that figure should not be treated as a
confirmed valuation without a credible valuation report or disclosed
transaction. Enterprise value, equity value, revenue and a promoter’s personal
wealth are different measures—and should not be used interchangeably.
Business, public life and responsibility
Reddy also serves in the Rajya Sabha and is
associated with the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS). That public role forms
another strand of his profile, separate from the business itself. The
distinction matters: political responsibilities and a company’s commercial
performance should be assessed on their own evidence.
A family’s move into healthcare

Sindhu Hospitals in Hyderabad adds a
healthcare-delivery dimension to the family’s story. Prime Minister Narendra
Modi inaugurated the hospital on 10 May 2026, according to official reporting.
Its presence broadens the family’s footprint beyond pharmaceutical
manufacturing into the delivery of healthcare. The two activities are connected
by a broad public-health context, but they are different businesses with
different operating demands.
The idea that still defines the enterprise
Reddy’s journey offers a reminder that
scientific knowledge becomes a business advantage only when it is matched by
manufacturing discipline, dependable quality, regulatory expertise and the
ability to reach markets. In pharmaceuticals, reputation is earned
repeatedly—one product, one batch and one market at a time.
THE BIZ MASALA PERSPECTIVE
Hetero’s story is about more than scale.
Its R&D-first beginnings helped establish a technical base for a business
that grew across products and markets. The enduring test is whether that
scientific discipline continues to shape the company as it matures.
